A newly engaged couple sparked a fierce debate after ‘waiting’ for their friends to collect the check at a dinner celebrating their proposal.
Ebony Mackey took to TikTok to explain how “annoyed” she was after she and partner Jon Nelsen were forced to cover the $800 cost of a celebratory meal for their friends.
The business owner, from New York, explained that Jon ended up depositing his card after the husband-to-be left to use the bathroom when the check came out.
She then told her friend not to expect any contributions for the upcoming wedding, as the dinner was “worth way more than most of the things on the list.”

The business owner, from New York, said Jon ended up depositing his card after the husband-to-be went to the bathroom when the check came out.
In the clip, which has so far been viewed over 195,000 times, Ebony speaks directly to the camera to unravel the situation that has been “bothering” her for the past few days.
She began by explaining that she and Jon had gone out to eat with another couple who had recently gotten engaged because the group had “a lot to catch up on.”
Ebony warned that the engagement happened months ago but it was just the first time the friends had seen each other since.
The content creator said she and Jon waited 30 minutes at the bar for the couple who were late.
Eventually, the foursome decided to order full meals, including appetizers and drinks.
“The conversation is going well. We’re having a great evening,” Ebony said.
“It’s been about an hour to an hour and a half. We all take a celebratory photo. And at the end, Jon and I notice that the restaurant is starting to close. They start packing their bags.
Ebony waved for the check before the waitress dropped the $800 bill “in the middle of the table” for “everyone to see.”

The post was quickly flooded with comments from other social media users who were bitterly divided.
But that’s when things took a turn for the worse.
“The guy suddenly says, ‘Oh, where’s the toilet?’ I have to use the toilet,” Ebony revealed.
“Jon gets me on my knees under the table and I’m like, are they going to try to charge us a bill?”
She explained how the woman looked at the remaining pair before Jon eventually reached for the check, to which she replied: “Oh, you deal?”
“And Jon says, ‘I guess so.’ And I’m sitting there, like, what the fuck?’ Ebony revealed.
The man who ran to the bathroom then returned and, after seeing Jon’s card on the table, also exclaimed, “Oh, thank you for looking after me.”
Jon said it wasn’t a problem but Ebony admitted: “At this point I’m very annoyed.”
“I’m mad at her and I’m mad at him and I didn’t say anything.
“And we ended up paying for their entire meal, plus their drinks, plus tip.” What would you have done in this situation?
Ebony uploaded the clip with a caption that read: “Honestly it was so embarrassing and expensive!!! I was so annoyed with the other man and the other woman, but we kept our cool and probably won’t go out with them again.

Ebony received so much interaction following this post that she later shared a follow-up clip titled: “Dinner Story, Part Two.”
One person wrote: “In the future, when someone asks, ‘Oh, are you healing?’ Be honest. Say, “No, I think it’s best if we share it.” It’s as simple as that.
“Honestly, I’m annoyed that you guys are so bothered BUT without saying anything! I will let them know IMMEDIATELY,” another person added.
A third person chimed in: “These situations ARE tricky, but (the people) who win are the ones who take the lead. So collect the check AND announce, “Let’s split it in half.” »
“Split the bill 50/50 or tell the person waiting at your table in advance that there will be two separate bills,” another person wrote.
One person gave the other couple the benefit of the doubt and wrote: “Maybe they thought you were treating them like an engagement gift.”
Another person added: “I would have done what your man did…he was gracious…and it would be the LAST meal for the other couple.”
Ebony received so much interaction following this post that she later shared a follow-up clip titled: “Dinner Story, Part Two.”
In it, she provided additional context on the situation.
“We live in Manhattan and every time we go out to eat, if there’s a group of people, every man pulls out his card when the bill comes.
“You don’t actually go to dinner and say to the waitress, ‘Okay, we’re going to split this three, four or five different ways.
“That’s just not really how it’s done in Manhattan.” You simply lay down the cards, then usually the waitress or waiter will divide them directly between all the cards.
“This is what we are used to. This is how we practice hospitality.

Ebony and Jon then said goodbye as the other man went to shake Jon’s hand – but he decided to “completely ignore her”.
She continued: “John is never going to not (put his card down).
“He’s a gentleman and he’ll just take it on the chin. He’ll take note of it and we’ll probably never go out to eat with them again.
“And if we do, Jon calls people. He lets it happen once, but the next time he’ll say something.
“He’ll say ‘So do I pay for that too now or what’s going on?’ He will.
Ebony admitted that after the incident, she asked her friend to accompany her to the bar to discuss it – because she didn’t want to argue publicly and become the “trouble table”.
She said: “So I take him to the bar and I’m like ‘hey, what was up with that?’ Jon wasn’t really going to pay for everyone’s meal at the table.
Ebony claimed the woman’s response was that her fiancé “went to the bathroom and Jon just pulled out his card…by the time he came back (the waitress) was already taking the bill off.”
The unhappy customer then told her friend: “When you get married, just know that we won’t bring anything and if you don’t want to invite us, that’s okay…”
