New York Mets $102 million pitcher Edwin Díaz shares a positive update from his hospital bed after a freak harrowing injury while celebrating Puerto Rico’s victory in the World Baseball Classic
New York Mets star Edwin Díaz has spoken out following his probable season-ending knee injury while celebrating a victory for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Diaz left his knee in a wheelchair following a patellar tendon injury in his right knee after the game Wednesday night.
He has since undergone surgery, and his return timeline is reported to be approximately eight months.
Mets fans were left distraught after the relief pitcher, who just re-signed with New York to a five-year, $102 million deal, was rostered for the MLB season.
“To all my beloved fans, especially Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am safe and on the mend,” Diaz wrote on his social media platforms Thursday night.

Diaz had to be carried off the field after suffering a freak injury following Wednesday’s win.
‘I feel blessed and grateful for your support with messages and prayers, thank you very much!
“I can’t wait to see them in New York again and blow those trumpets.”
Diaz looked promising before his return to Queens, pitching a perfect ninth inning to close out Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic.
The Puerto Rican players were jumping together in the infield when Diaz collapsed to the ground and quickly reached for his right leg. The right-hander was crying, unable to put weight on his leg.
Diaz’s brother and Cincinnati pitcher Alexis Diaz was also crying as Edwin was taken away. Mets teammate and Puerto Rico shortstop Francisco Lindor stood near him with his hands on his head.
The 29-year-old is one of the best closers in baseball. He had 32 saves in each of the past two seasons with the Mets, earning him his second All-Star nomination in 2022.
Diaz was an All-Star with the Seattle Mariners in 2018, when he led the majors with 57 saves.
He is 16-29 with a 2.93 ERA with 205 saves over the past seven seasons.

Diaz ultimately left the field in a wheelchair at LoanDeport Park in Miami in emotional scenes.

He was injured during an innocent moment with his teammates, who ran towards him after the win.
