Holmes, 24, is expected to join the North Queensland Cowboys on a $ 4 million contract when he returns to Australia.
He joined New York in April as part of the NFL International Player Pathway Program.
He participated in off-season training, training camp and preseason with New York. As part of the NFL program, all four AFC East teams this season received an extra place in their practice teams for players to continue working on their soccer skills.
Holmes was a striking winger and fullback for the Cronulla sharks in the NRL before he left for the US.
He went to the United States for a chance to pursue his dream of playing American football in the NFL.
Holmes has not been successful in hoping to play on the roster of the New York Jets
Holmes had a year left for his contract with the Sharks, but instead the team released him and left about $ 720,000.
& # 39; I just felt that I wanted to test myself as a person and as an athlete & # 39 ;, Holmes told The Associated Press in August.
& # 39; I didn't really think about what I was giving up, I think. I just wanted to chase more. & # 39;
