New Year's Eve Australia LIVE UPDATES: Chaotic moment massive crowds ignore rules and race to the best vantage spots in Sydney

More than a million Australians are expected to flock to Sydney to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks.

The world-famous show will begin after a turbulent week in which train strikes threatened to derail the event.

Crowds ignore rules at New Year’s Eve viewing point

Wild footage captured the moment hundreds of Australians raced to get the best spot at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

“Shame on whoever started running and breaking the ropes,” the caption read.

Eager revelers were seen carrying camping gear and bags as they ran through the park and under a boundary rope.

Social media users were quick to criticize the crowd.

“I honestly can’t think of anything worse,” one wrote.

Another added: ‘Are they just going to sit there all day waiting for the fireworks tonight? No, thanks.’

New Year’s Eve fireworks are saved

The New Year’s Eve fireworks were saved after a last-minute deal between rail unions and the New South Wales government last week.

Revelers were worried about the threat of fireworks cancellation due to train strikes amid an ongoing pay battle.

A Christmas Eve hearing collapsed when the Fair Work Commission agreed the union had abandoned enough action for there to be a negligible risk to New Year’s celebrations.
