Criminals are released from prison EARLY because of the risk of COVID-19
Some of the 13,000 New South Wale prisoners are released early amid the coronavirus crisis.
The new legislation, which is expected to be introduced in Parliament today, will allow the State Commissioner for Corrective Services to release prisoners at an early age.
Attorney General Mark Speakman said the ‘extraordinary measures should only be used to respond to the threat posed by COVID-19, and would allow the Commissioner of Corrective Services to prioritize vulnerable offenders and others at low risk for the community for consideration for parole “.
The Commissioner is only allowed to release prisoners if this is considered ‘reasonably necessary’ because of the risk to public health or the good order of the prisons.
