Kamala Harris is falling in the polls against Donald Trump as the memory of her debate against the former president fades amid an ever-evolving news cycle.
The vice president’s standing declined shortly after Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, scored a decisive debate victory against Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz last week, a new poll shows.
In September, after Harris and Trump faced off for the first time, the vice president was ahead 50 percent to her competitor’s 45 percent. It was his strongest performance to date in the Yahoo News/YouGov poll.
The same poll now puts Harris ahead by just 2 percent, 48 percent to 46 percent, a gap within the poll’s margin of error.

And among likely voters, the vice president’s lead vanishes completely, with the two tied at 47 percent.
Of the 1,714 American adults surveyed in the latest poll conducted Oct. 2-4, a majority found Vance to be the clear winner of the vice presidential debate.
Forty-one percent of Americans who watched or closely followed debate coverage on Tuesday, October 1, said Trump’s election won compared to 32 percent who said Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate was the winner.

When third-party candidates against Harris and Trump are included in the most recent poll, 46 percent of registered voters prefer the Democratic vice president compared to 45 percent who say they would vote for the former president.
Harris still leads Trump, but within the polls’ margin of error
The results paint a similar picture of what has happened since Harris entered this race this summer: The 2024 presidential race is still too close to call.
While Vance had a very good night debating Walz, it doesn’t seem like his performance helped move the needle significantly in Trump’s favor.
Both candidates receive positive performance reviews: 59 percent say Vance was excellent or good and 52 percent say the same about Walz.
