Black and white images of the mutilated Porsche 550 Spyder from the acting heartbreaker recently popped up at an auction house in Boston to be sold.

In 1955, motorcycle enthusiast Dean was on his way to a racing event in Salinas, California, when he attacked Ford Tudor of US Navy veteran Donald Turnupseed and bounced up and down the much lighter sports car of the movie star.

While Mr. Turnupseed walked away from the wreck with only a bloody nose and bruises, Dean suffered a broken neck and died shortly after being taken to the hospital.

The collection of 30 photos is now on sale for $ 20,000 with RR Auctions of Boston.

They were taken by police officers and later given to the Ford driver's lawyer when it was thought that a lawsuit would be brought against him.

The lawyer, Robert Coyle, held them after the case fell and they were inherited by his son who is now offering them for the first time.

Miraculously, the driver of the Ford, US Navy veteran Donald Turnupseed, appeared with only a few bruises in the face and a bloody nose.

The seller, also known as Robert Coyle, said: These are official photos taken after the crash.

& # 39; Our father was Donald Turnupseed's lawyer. When the case had fallen, he was still in possession of the photos and he was a history buff, ensuring that they were not destroyed. & # 39;

Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at RR Auction, said: & James Dean's early death echoes to this day.

& # 39; These never before seen images offer an intensely unique perspective of the crash location and the resulting massacre – many of the photos were taken just hours after the accident. & # 39;

Dean became a cultural icon after his leading role as troubled teenager Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause (1955).

He shared a passion for racing with two other leading men of the era, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, and started his first professional race earlier this year.
