Netflix fans have gone wild after discovering an “underrated gem” of a film on the platform – but have warned anyone watching it for the first time that the ending will “drive you crazy”.

In a post on the Netflix Recommendations 2024 Facebook group, one user asked: “Next on my watch list. It’s over two hours long. Is it any good or just a waste of time?”

In response, other users called the image a must-see and praised it, posting: “It’s very good, but you have to pay attention.”

Fans referenced the 2010 release of Shutter Island, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley.

The thriller is based on the story of Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, who are sent to an asylum on a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy discovers a shocking truth about the place.

Chuck and Teddy must investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando, a nursing home patient who previously drowned her three children, but the nursing home staff is initially uncooperative.

Although Teddy’s astute investigative skills soon provide a promising lead, the hospital denies him access to records he suspects might reveal the case.

After a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, leading Teddy to doubt his memory, his partner, and even his own sanity.

Shutter Island, an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel of the same name, grossed $295m (£230m) at the box office, becoming Scorsese’s second-highest-grossing film.

Following its release in 2010, it was reported that Paramount and HBO had been considering a television series called Ashecliffe, which would serve as an origin story for the film, but it never materialized.

While the film did not win any major awards, it remains a favorite among moviegoers since its release, with an IMDb score of 8.2 from over 1.2 million ratings on the site.
