The Maid on Netflix follows Land’s memories of her time working as a housemaid and is told through the central character, a single mother named Alex, played by Margaret Qualley, who flees her abusive partner and takes refuge in a women’s shelter.
Melissa & Joey star Nick Robinson plays Sean Boyd, Alex’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child. The cast also includes Raymond Ablack (Ginny & Georgia), Billy Burke (Twilight) and Little Fires Everywhere star Anika Noni Rose.
Struggling to make ends meet, Alex takes a job as a housekeeper to support herself and her daughter, all while battling with her ex-partner to retain custody of her daughter.
The experiences closely mirror events in Land’s own life; the author comes from a middle-class family in Alaska, yet found herself homeless at age 20 after a fight with her boyfriend.
The show follows Alex’s fierce custody battle with her abusive partner Sean, pictured, played by Nick Robinson.
Montana resident Stephanie Land wrote her memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will To Survive in 2019, when it quickly became a bestseller.
It has earned a remarkable 94 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with one critic saying, “This drama is powerful, heartbreaking, inspiring, and absolutely one of the best Netflix shows I’ve seen all year.”
