Portuguese coach Fernando Santos said afterwards that Dutch referee Danny Makelie had apologized for the mistake.
The referee apologized in the booth and told me he was ashamed. I was in the locker room with him and apologized, ”Santos said.
He had told me on the field that he would see the footage and that if he did, he would call me to apologize – and it was.
Matic teased Portuguese couple Ronaldo and Fernandes after Saturday’s controversial moment
‘It is the second time in a qualifying phase that they apologize to me after the game. I told him on the field that there was no VAR or goal line – one of the things he told me was that the goal line was important – but I told him the ball was two feet inside the goal.
‘There was no obstacle between the goalkeeper and the goal line. [it is a] problem because we pulled up. We have to rethink. The referees are human and make mistakes, but that’s why there is the VAR and the goal-line technology to prevent this. ‘
Ronaldo and Fernandes are likely to play against Luxembourg tonight, where the 2016 European champions are at the top of Group A after two games together with Serbia.
