The St. Louis native (born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.) and his wife (born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas), 44, were asked about the possibility of a residency in a new interview with Entertainment tonight.

It appears that the couple, who married last December and welcomed their first child in July, had been in talks for a residency not long ago.

‘It’s funny you say that. “There was talk about that precisely not long ago,” Nelly joked.

The couple goes back a few decades, as they began dating in 2003 after meeting at the Grammy Awards.

They dated for a decade until they split in 2013, but reconciled in 2023 and quietly tied the knot a few days after Christmas.

They welcomed their first child, Kareem Kenkaide, in July, as Nelly joked, “I’ve been relegated to very, very small parts of our life,” before opening up about what Ashanti is like as a mother.

‘She is an amazing mom. “Seeing someone care so much about another person and give their all and be willing to give their all,” he said.

“You know, like she said, sometimes it can go too far, but you’d rather have one parent who goes too far and one who doesn’t go far enough,” he said.

“It’s laughable love in a good way because I just laugh, I choke. I said, look at this baby. I can’t wait to show him some of the pictures in the videos, like look what your mom was doing to you.” She treats him like a Build A Bear,” Nelly joked.

The baby’s middle name, Kareem, is of Arabic origin and translates as “generous, kind and dignified,” he told the outlet.

Ashanti said Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., was the person who named her son.

“His father named him with a lot of pride” and thought the name was “really cool,” Ashanti told the outlet.
