Ian Smith quits Neighbors role amid terminal cancer battle

Ian Smith leaves his role in Neighbors amid a terminal battle with cancer.

The soap opera icon, who has played Harold Bishop on the Australian soap since 1987, says his prognosis is dire.

“A few months ago I found out I have cancer,” the 86-year-old told Herald of the sun on Mondays.

“That I have a very aggressive cancer that has no cure and they hope that… they hope that I will die.”

The Australian actor, who has played the beloved character in Neighbors since 1987, described the cancer as “not solvable.”

Bishop’s character will receive a fitting send-off from the series, executive producer Jason Herbison told the publication.

“It was a very emotional moment on set when we paid tribute to him and the incredible contribution he has made to the show,” he said.

Herbison added that Smith, like his character, is deeply “loved” by both the show and the audience.

A Network 10 spokesperson said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn of Ian Smith’s cancer diagnosis.

‘A beloved member of the Neighbors family, Ian has been the heart and soul of the show since he first arrived on Ramsay Street in 1987.

‘Ian has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to audiences around the world for decades.

“Together with the cast, crew and all his fans around the world, we will support Ian in any way we can during this difficult time.”
