A Nebraska high school was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after a gunman shot a student in the stomach before fleeing the scene.
Police and helicopters were dispatched to the area of Northwest High School in Omaha, and police later said the suspect was in custody.
The victim was identified as a 15-year-old student at the school, who was hospitalized in critical condition, reports KeTV Television.
Initial reports indicated that police described the gunman as “young,” however no suspect description was given as the Omaha Police Department announced the arrest and said there was no longer a “threat to the community.”
The shooting occurred at Northwest High School (pictured) in Omaha, Nebraska.
Police announced they had a suspect in custody about 30 minutes after closing, when the parents and student met at a reunification area.
Following the shooting, nearby Marian High School and Roncalli Catholic High School were also placed under quarantine.
Authorities said the lockdowns would remain in place until the active shooter situation is over and the suspect is in custody, which took about 30 minutes.
A reunification area has reportedly been set up at the high school’s football stadium so parents can reunite with their children.
This comes days after Apalachee High School in Georgia suffered the worst school shooting in state history when 14-year-old student Colt Gray allegedly opened fire on 13 people, killing four.
