Nearly FIVE million bottles of Fabuloso cleaner are being recalled over fears of bacterial contamination
- Fabuloso said there is ‘a risk of bacterial growth in the recalled products’
- This is due to a lack of preservatives that are not added at proper levels
Nearly five million bottles of Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner were recalled by manufacturer Colgate-Palmolive on Wednesday.
Fabuloso’s statement said there is “a risk of bacterial growth in the recalled products” that could expose people to “serious infections that may require medical treatment.”
The recalled products include 4.9 million bottles in the US and 56,000 in Canada produced between December 14, 2022 and January 23, 2023.
According to the statement, the risk of bacteria is due to a lack of preservatives not added at proper levels during the manufacturing process.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also released the urgent recall warning people about bacteria entering the body “when inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin.”

The household cleaning products company said 3.9 million of the affected bottles were never released for sale, but were released to its distributors.
The statement said the types of bacteria that could potentially grow in the bottles are “Pseudomonas bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens.”
The environmental organisms are usually commonly found in soil and water.
It is unlikely that the bacteria could pose a medical risk to people with healthy immune systems, Fabuloso’s recall statement said.
However, it cautioned, “People with weakened immune systems, external medical devices or underlying lung conditions who are exposed to the bacteria are at risk of a serious infection that may require medical treatment.”
Both Fabuloso and the Consumer Product Safety Commission said: “The bacteria can enter the body if they are inhaled, through the eyes or through a break in the skin.”
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said retailers included Amazon, Dollar General, Family Dollar, The Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Walmart and other major retailers nationwide.
The cleaning supplies cost between $1 and $11.

“We remain committed to maintaining the highest level of product quality and have taken action to ensure we meet those standards.”
No injuries or incidents have yet been reported following the announcement of the recall.
Customers who are in possession of the affected bottles can fill in Fabulosos reimbursement application form for a refund.
Impacted bottles contain a manufacturing lot code in addition to the barcode and are printed on the top of the bottle.
Fabuloso said affected bottles start with eight digits 2348US78 through 2365US78 and 3001US78 through 3023US78.
Customers are told that codes matching ‘MX’ are not part of the recall list.
