Nearly 60% of female students say they have been sexually assaulted in college, research shows

Nearly 60 percent of female college students say they have been sexually assaulted in college, a shocking new survey shows.

Student news site The Tab asked 4,000 students about their experiences of sexual assault on campus for its research on sexual assault in 2021.

It found widespread problems – 59 percent of the female students who responded said they had been sexually assaulted in college.

But only seven percent of students reported their sexual assault to their university, the numbers show.

It turned out that two-thirds were not satisfied with the way their university handled their case and half said they were not told about the outcome of their complaint.

It comes just weeks after reports of sexual harassment, abuse, misogyny and assault published by the Everyone’s Invited website – an anti-rape movement recently established in the UK – include the names of a host of elite universities.

Dr. Ann Olivarius, a lawyer who helped victims of the Warwick group scandal sue their university, said the results showed that universities were failing students.

“I don’t know of any universities that have put in place good, fair and functioning processes,” Olivarius told The Tab.

‘When we sue universities, we often speak of intellectual pride. They don’t think they should be held accountable. ‘

She added: ‘They are guilty, they are ashamed and they are not doing their job’.

There are big differences between universities – 70 percent of Oxford Brookes respondents who took the survey said they had been sexually assaulted during their time in college.

Oxford Brookes told The Tab it was “extremely concerned” to learn that students had experienced sexual assault, saying it had no place in college.

Students said the incident most likely took place in a pub or club.

But for those who reported the incident, it likely happened in hallways.

It comes after that came out last month Exeter University – where JK Rowling and Zara Tindall studied – tops the list of 108 universities where allegations of sexual assault have been made by people on the Everyone’s Invited website.

The forum, set up by former student Soma Sara last year to allow people to share their stories of sexual abuse and ‘rape culture’, has shocked British educational institutions.

Along with top schools, the UK’s most prestigious universities were named in over 1,000 testimonials and Red Brick Exeter appeared the most, in 65 anonymous testimonials on the website.

Oxford, Leeds, Edinburgh and University College London are the top five.

Everyone’s Invited founder Miss Sara, who set it up while living at her grandmother’s house in Paris during the lockdown after graduating from UCL, said they were overwhelmed by new testimonials from universities.

The number of universities mentioned emerged days after Education Secretary Gavin Williamson ordered a crackdown on student rape culture and called on the universities to follow a new emergency code.

A spokesperson for the University of Exeter told MailOnline at the time: ‘The safety, security and wellbeing of our students is and will remain our primary concern.

‘We have taken a wide variety of security and support measures in recent years, improved our policies and reporting system, and continue to work with students, colleagues and community partners to tackle misogyny and violence against women. Provost Commission in April on our collective role as a community and institution. ‘

“We have made it clear to all members of our community that we have no tolerance for sexual harassment, abuse or assault, and that criminal or disciplinary proceedings will be brought against those who commit these crimes.

‘We will continue to support each other and work together to ensure that all members of our community feel safe and secure. We encourage all students to apply and get the support they need. ‘
