Ncuti Gatwa’s future on Doctor Who is uncertain as he admitted he had “no idea” whether he would return for series three.

The 31-year-old actor appeared at San Diego Comic Con alongside producer Russell T Davies and Millie Gibson on Thursday and remained coy about whether he will continue in the role.

Russell, 62, added fuel to the fire when he admitted that decisions on who would star in season three have not yet been made as they are still in the midst of filming season two.

The screenwriter said: “We’ve filmed the second season, but we’re only halfway through. We still have many months of post-production left. There’s a long way to go, so we haven’t made any decisions yet.”

Although Ncuti admitted he was unsure whether he would return, he said playing the Doctor was “surreal”.

“I’m still getting used to being the Doctor, but the second season was lovely. I felt like the suit fit me perfectly. I was finding my feet in the first season and having a great time, but the second season felt like an opportunity to flex my muscles properly,” he said, according to Mirror.

As well as filming the second season, Ncuti will star in a West End production of The Importance of Being Earnest later this year.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Millie, who plays Ruby Sunday, will reportedly only make a fleeting appearance in the upcoming series, despite joining Ncuti and Russell at Comic Con.

She will be replaced by Varada Sethu, 32, who has been pictured filming with Ncuti.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies previously confirmed that Millie’s character had simply been put on hold for now, but that she would be returning to the show before long.

He explained: ‘This is a pause. I really felt like Ruby’s story stopped there. She couldn’t get all that information about her family, all that emotional overload, and run away in the TARDIS. It stops there. She’s coming back.’

Meanwhile, Millie has been pursuing other projects while starring in the new version of The Forsyte Saga.

This comes after the show’s future was called into question, despite filming for the fifteenth season having already begun, after the fourteenth failed to attract viewers and resulted in “disappointing” ratings.

An ambitious deal with Disney (rumoured to be worth $100m) meant that each episode aired on BBC iPlayer at midnight on Fridays to appease American viewers before being broadcast in its traditional Saturday teatime slot on terrestrial television.

This meant a drop in overall viewers despite the BBC’s contract with the US media giant aimed at revitalising the show with lavish special effects and Davies, 61, claimed the deal would finally put the show “on par with Star Wars and Marvel”.

The final episode, however, attracted just 2.02 million viewers, a sharp drop from Jodie Whittaker’s final outing as the first Doctor, which was watched by 3.7 million in real time.
