MANILA, Philippines – The College of St. Benilde staved off a comeback rally from Perpetual Help as it emerged with an 86-80 victory in the NCAA Season 99 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the San Juan Arena on Tuesday.
The Blazers, who improved to 3-3 in the standings, led by as many as 20 before the Altas tried to mount a rally in the payoff period — a sight that didn’t satisfy coach Charles Tiu.
“I was satisfied with the first three quarters through the fourth quarter. I don’t know what we were doing. We were ahead by 20 (but) the boys became careless, they thought the game was over, they couldn’t follow the instructions,” Tiu said.
“If we play like this, we won’t get anywhere.”
Fortunately for Benilde, Robi Nayve came out on top and secured the win with an all-round performance of 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Migs Oczon, who scored a career-high 29 points on Saturday, continued his stellar performance with 19 markers.
Art Roque’s 24-point performance was wasted as Perpetual Help fell to a 1-4 map. Christian Pagaran and Marcus Nitura also had 16 and 15 points respectively in the loss.

San Sebastian, meanwhile, stunned the booming Jose Rizal University, 72-59.
The Golden Stags ended the Heavy Bombers’ three-game winning streak and improved to 2-3 on the season. JRU, meanwhile, slid to 4-2.
Jessie Sumoda powered San Sebastian to victory with 15 points, while Raymart Escobido and Alex Desoyo had 12 each in the victory.
Agem Miranda was two rebounds away from a double-double with 15 points and eight boards, but it was all for naught.
