Comcast announced Sunday that NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell has been fired after he admitted to having an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman at the company.

Comcast said it made the decision to fire Shell after an investigation into his conduct by an outside consultant.

A company-wide email says the Shell team will now report to Comcast President Mike Kavanagh, CNBC reports.

The relationship was revealed during an investigation by an outside lawyer investigating a complaint against Shell.

Shell is married to Laura Fay Shell, who previously worked for Los Angeles County Superintendent Zev Yaroslavsky.

In a statement, Shell said, “Today is my last day as CEO of NBCUniversal. I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman at the company, which I deeply regret.”

“I am truly sorry I left my colleagues at Comcast and NBCUniversal, they are the most talented people in the business and it was a privilege to have worked with them over the past 19 years.”

“When our principles and policies are violated, we will always move quickly to take appropriate action, as we have done here.”

No alternative name has been specified for Shell.
