Los Angeles Clippers swingman Amir Coffey was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm following a routine traffic stop at Hollywood’s busy intersection between Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue.
The 26-year-old Minnesota native was a passenger in a car that was stopped in Hollywood around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, DailyMail.com confirmed. Officers said they smelled marijuana, prompting a search that uncovered a loaded weapon. Coffey reportedly acknowledged that the firearm belonged to him and he was arrested for misdemeanor firearm possession.
Los Angeles County jail records show Coffey was arrested around 5 a.m. and later released on his own recognizance.
Another passenger was cited for marijuana in a moving vehicle, according to police records provided to DailyMail.com.
“We are aware of a legal situation involving Amir Coffey and are investigating it,” a team spokesperson told DailyMail.com in an email.

“On July 30, 2023, at 1:50 a.m. Hollywood officers observed a speeding vehicle in Sunset/Highland and conducted a traffic stop,” read a police report provided to DailyMail.com.
“The driver was cited for speeding. One of the passengers was cited for possession of marijuana. The other passenger was Amir Coffey of the NBA Clippers. He was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle 25400 (a) 3 PC. Reservation # 6650217.’
Coffey could face up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine for arrest, but that would be unlikely for a first-time offender.
Undrafted from Minnesota, Coffey signed a two-way deal with the Clippers in 2019 and has since been shuffled between the NBA club and its G League affiliate, the Agua Caliente Clippers.
He averaged 3.4 points in 50 NBA appearances last season.
