Andrew Bogut has accused the AFL of a “cover-up” and claims his stars offered him drugs after explosive allegations about cocaine use in the game.
Footy have been embroiled in a drugs scandal after it was claimed players had been asked to fake injuries to avoid testing after taking cocaine.
The explosive allegation has prompted the founding president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, Dick Pound, to compare the league’s alleged practices to those used by cheating athletes in East Germany in the 1970s.
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon was less than impressed with that comparison, but former NBA star Bogut has weighed in on the beleaguered sport, jokingly calling for the creation of a cocaine “cover-up” round .
“The AFL continues to tell people how to live their lives, but they should clean up their own league before they start preaching about social issues,” the former Golden State Warriors star said.

The AFL is in the midst of huge drug allegations that have rocked the sport.
‘It’s pretty obvious what happened – the AFL knew they had a problem with guys doing drugs, so let’s just make them retire with a sore hammy and avoid testing that way.
‘Anyone with half a brain can see why they did it. They’ve obviously tried to move the chess pieces to navigate a (WADA) policy that they’ve agreed to respect, because the carrot is federal government funding.’
Bogut added that players had offered him drugs during nights out in Melbourne.
‘Everyone knows what’s happening in Melbourne. “I’ve been to numerous nightclubs where AFL guys drink a bottle of water and jump around like crazy,” he revealed.
“I was offered (drugs) by AFL players and the fact it’s been kept secret for so long shows how far the tentacles of the AFL can reach.”
Separately, Pound urged Australian police to investigate possible links between players and organized crime gangs who could be supplying illicit drugs.
But Dillon dismissed Pound’s “ill-informed” opinion.
Dick Pound has been an incredible administrator, he has played some very important roles, but in relation to those comments I think he is very wrong.
Bogut jokingly suggested the AFL create a round of “cover-up” following the allegations.
“They are misinformed and they are wrong, but what I will say is that the open conversations that have arisen as a result of some of these reports, I think are important and we are willing to talk,” Dillon told 3AW radio.
‘We have officially said that our illicit drugs policy is under review and that these conversations will help us shape a policy that is fit for purpose for 2024 and beyond…’
Geelong coach Chris Scott echoed Dillon’s comments.
—That Dick Pound from Canada, or wherever he is, doesn’t have a deep knowledge of politics. He clearly gives every indication that he doesn’t understand it if he compares it to the East Germans.
“A long time ago, players were subjected to a system where they said ‘yes, we will be part of the WADA policy, but on top of that, and apart from that, we will be subject to an illicit drugs policy.’
“Players submit to it on the basis that it’s a welfare-based program, not one where you can cater to the whims of people who just love to point and shame.”
