Two months after his widely publicized outing, Czech soccer player Jakub Jankto has been suspended for failing to test for drugs. As his club Sparta Prague announced on Wednesday, the midfielder will not be used for the time being after causing a stir during a traffic stop in the capital.
Jankto should now first “regulate his personal affairs,” it said in a statement: “The player is not ready to fulfill the obligations set out in his professional contract.”
On Tuesday, police stopped Jankto’s car after other drivers suspected drunk driving. The 27-year-old passed the alcohol test that followed, but refused a drug test and a medical examination. According to a media report, he is said to have been traveling without a driver’s license, which had already been confiscated.
Jankto, who is currently on loan at Sparta from Spanish top flight club Getafe FC, has won 45 international caps (four goals) for the national team and took part in Euro 2021 with the Czech Republic. After publicly professing his homosexuality in February, a wave of solidarity followed.
