A dozen concrete statues of American servants have been placed in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida as an underwater monument.

Dozens of divers, including experienced amputees, swam 30 feet down on Monday as part of the opening ceremony of the Circle of Heroes.

The six foot statues and the monument with the bronze emblems of five military branches represent the men and women of the US Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Navy and the Coast Guard.

They are intended as a permanent establishment in Veteran's Reef, about ten miles west of Clearwater.

They honor the armed forces and offer a unique diving experience.

The non-profit of former congressman David Jolly, Brighter Future Florida, led the fundraising to complete the memorial. It was designed by his uncle, Heyward Matthews, a professor of oceanography at St. Petersburg College.

Pinellas County raised $ 50,000 and Brighter Future Florida raised $ 150,000.

& # 39; This underwater exhibition with the heroes of our nation will also help preserve marine life in our Gulf waters by serving as an artificial reef, & # 39; said Jolly. & # 39; I also thank my uncle, Dr. Heyward Mathews, for creating the concept and for his dedication to the growth of the diving community and tourism in our region. & # 39;
