NRL superstar Nathan Cleary has sensationally revealed he is open to a possible move to the Super League competition, which would see him join his Matildas forward girlfriend Mary Fowler in England.
The sporting power couple has been making headlines since Daily Mail Australia exclusively documented their first public appearance together early last November.
Fowler, who plays for Women’s Super League club Manchester City, has since returned home to the UK, and now Cleary has indicated she could join her.
The three-time premiership-winning back, who is currently in England ahead of Sunday’s World Club Challenge match against Wigan, told the Mirror who is willing to make the change.
‘I’m not against [a Super League move]. “I’m pretty open-minded about that kind of stuff,” Cleary said.
Nathan Cleary has revealed that he is open to a possible move to Super League, which would allow him to join his girlfriend Mary Fowler (pictured together) in England.
The Panthers are currently in Manchester ahead of their World Club Challenge match, and Fowler’s Manchester City team are allowing them to use their facilities (pictured).
‘I think just being able to experience different cultures and different experiences is something I enjoy doing. I’m not closed to that idea.
The Penrith Panthers are staying in Manchester and Cleary loves being able to walk around the city undisturbed.
“I was lucky enough to spend almost two months in Manchester to attend the World Cup and I enjoyed it very much,” he said.
‘I’m lucky to know a bit about the city now and know where everything is, so it’s good to be back.
‘In fact, I really like being able to wander the streets and no one knowing who you are. I think they’ve only recognized me once. It’s a nice change (to Sydney).’
Cleary said Sun that life in England is attractive for other reasons too.
‘I have great admiration for the English fans, the way they sing and get involved. I’m sure I’ll get a bit of support from the Wigan fans but I’m looking forward to it.
“But I enjoy just being able to live a normal life and at some point I wouldn’t be too opposed to trying it here.”
The Panthers running back says he enjoys life in the UK and can see the appeal of living there, and not just because of how close it would be to Fowler (pictured together).
Cleary (pictured after winning the 2023 NRL grand final) says he admires English fans and the way they support their teams.
But first I have lots of things to do in Penrith. Winning the World Club Challenge is one of them.”
The World Club Challenge between Penrith and Wigan will begin at 8pm local time on Saturday 24 February. For fans in Australia, the match will begin at 7am on Sunday.
