A father accused of stabbing and killing another man was picking up his children from his partner's house, when a fight broke out between them.

Peni Ben Apikotoa was stabbed several times on Saturday night after being called to her home in west Sydney by her friend, Cassie Sanders, who had allegedly been attacked by Nathan Chatimba, her former boyfriend.

Chatimba's current partner, Catherine Barlow, told The Daily Telegraph that the 31-year-old man had gone to Mrs. Sanders's house in St Clair to pick up her children when he allegedly killed Mr. Apikotoa.

Chatimba has been accused of murdering the 34-year-old man, who has been described by his bereaved family as "kind, caring and affectionate."

Police claim that Mr. Apikotoa responded to the distress call after Ms. Sanders was attacked at home.

A neighbor said Seven news he saw the men throw punches before Chatimba supposedly took out a knife.

Residents say the 31-year-old fled the scene before being arrested by police two hours later.

He appeared briefly in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday and was denied bail. He will face the court in October.

Chatimba looked distressed when he was arrested by the police.
