NASSER HUSSAIN: world class by Jimmy Anderson and Chris Woakes

That was the perfect storm for India. They were on and off throughout the day, and the rain did not stop increasing the intensity of the playing field. Batting was not easy.

But make no mistake: it was a brilliant bowling in England. In particular, the swing bowling of Jimmy Anderson and Chris Woakes was world class. Yes, the conditions helped them. But they nailed their lengths superbly. There were some unplayable things there.

Four years ago, at Lord's, India faced a green zone, only Anderson and Stuart Broad played too short the first day and set them free. So the credit should go to Joe Root and the bowling coach, Chris Silverwood, to make sure their four sailors are successful.

In the past, people have said that it is difficult to persuade two guys with 900 test clubs between them to throw the ball higher than they are used to. And, to be fair, Anderson and Broad have always been able to point out their excellent records as proof that they know what they are doing.

But, in the evidence of this game and the last one in Edgbaston, something has changed. England is improving by assessing the conditions and reacting immediately.

That's why Anderson was able to defeat Murali Vijay with the fifth ball of the game: he was on the straight line. And the key to that dismissal was the lateness that swayed. Vijay was pointing to the leg because the ball had given him three quarters of the way without moving through the air.

The last blow was also for Virat Kohli, but in his case, Woakes made good use of the fold. It became wider, which persuaded Kohli to aim at the leg. When the ball swayed at the last minute, it took the outer edge. First class bowling.

It was a good example of why I had Woakes on my side at all times in Home Tests. Both Andrew Strauss and Ed Smith have talked about choosing horses for the courses, which is fine with me. Choose Woakes in England, and someone with a little more speed overseas.

If there is a complaint, it is a family complaint: the slippage. The cord seems to me uneasy, with new faces and guardians trying to learn a new skill. Slip capture requires time to learn. You can not get people

Woakes took two scalps and his Lord's Test record now stands at 16 plots at the low average of 9.93.

I said before that I would have Root in my cord, although I dropped one, but obviously I prefer to lead the side from the middle. But right now England has to create more opportunities than they should to defeat a team.

What was instructive, however, was that on the two occasions a retainer released Joss in the second rejection, Jos Buttler took a wicket with his next ball, and Buttler caught them both.

That says a lot about both players. Woakes is not someone to drop his head. He had a few quick words with Buttler, but then he continued with the work and got the next installment. And Buttler was able to forget his mistakes very quickly. There is a lot of character on this side.

Above all, however, this was a day to praise the bowlers. It was an almost perfect performance, and it reminded me of the first morning on the Trent Bridge against Australia in 2015. On that occasion, Broad examined them alone. But this was a true team effort.
