NASA scientists have reimagined shapes in the night sky using data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, which gives a modern twist to the old practice.

However, unlike the 88 official constellations, which are formed by recognizable shapes created by the brightest stars, the new constellations trace the highest energy light form in the universe: gamma rays.

The space agency has launched an interactive website that shows the different constellations of gamma rays in the sky, revealing everything from the Albert Einstein to the USS Enterprise.

WHAT ARE GAMMA RAY BURSTS?

Gamma-ray bursts (GRB), gamma-ray energy jets that come from black holes, can be created in two different ways, resulting in long or short GRBs.

They are created from some of the most violent deaths in the universe.

The long GRBs last about a minute, and scientists believe they are produced by a supernova: when the core of a massive star collapses to become a black hole.

Short GRBs last one second and occur when two neutron stars merge.

"Developing these unofficial constellations was a fun way to highlight a decade of Fermi's achievements," said Julie McEnergy, a Fermi project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

"In one way or another, all constellations of gamma rays are related to the science of Fermi."

"By 2015, the number of different sources mapped by Fermi's LAT had expanded to about 3,000, 10 times more than the amount known before the mission," said Elizabeth Ferrara of Goddard, who led the constellation project.

"For the first time, the number of known gamma ray sources was comparable to the number of bright stars, so we thought that a new set of constellations was an excellent way to illustrate this point."

The interactive site projects the gamma-ray sky, as Fermi sees it, with illustrations by the illustrator from Sonoma State University, Aurore Simonnet.

"Fermi is still strong, and now we are preparing a new LAT catalog for the whole sky," said Jean Ballet, Fermi team member at the French Atomic Commission in Saclay.

"This will add around 2,000 sources, many of which will vary enormously in brightness, further enriching these constellations and animating the high-energy sky."
