‘The question has been decided’: Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti hints he could LEAVE the club – just weeks after winning Serie A – and claims the situation is ‘long in the making’ after ‘working from morning to evening” this season

  • Luciano Spalletti has suggested he could leave Napoli at the end of the season
  • Earlier this month, Spalletti guided Napoli to their first Serie A title since 1990
  • Spalletti, who has led Napoli since 2021, still has one year left on his contract

Luciano Spalletti has suggested he could leave Napoli just weeks after guiding the club to the Serie A title.

Spalletti received plenty of praise after Napoli won Serie A for the first time since 1990.

However, the 64-year-old has since hinted he may leave.

Moreover, president Aurelio De Laurentiis said he doesn’t want to ‘clip the wings’ of the coach.

Speaking at a press conference after Napoli’s 3-1 win over Inter, Spalletti said the situation was “in the making for a long time” after working “from morning till night”.

He said: ‘The matter has been decided, you don’t change your mind every day.

“It’s a situation that’s been brewing for a long time. When you work from morning to night, certain things tend to ripen in your mind, because you have to put on this show all the time.

“If you’re not convinced that you can give all these people deserve, it’s fair to think about it. You think about it, you come to a conclusion and then you stick to it.

“It’s not something that just fell from the sky out of nowhere.”

Spalletti, who has led Roma since 2021, has one year left on his contract.

If Spalletti leaves, he could be replaced by Rafa Benitez, who previously managed Napoli between 2013 and 2015.

It was recently reported that Spalletti is not on good terms with De Laurentiis as negotiations over a new deal have frozen.

There is uncertainty over whether Napoli can repeat their title feat next season.

Spalletti, 64, has had a long managerial career, the vast majority of which has been in Italy.

Napoli’s success this season is Spalletti’s first time winning the Serie A title.

He has already played for clubs such as Inter Milan, Roma, Udinese and Zenit St Petersburg.
