Earlier this month, in a nearby neighborhood of Harlem, a group of men were photographed doing drugs in the open near La Marqueta Market.

Photos and videos of the men lying on Park Avenue between E 115th Street and E 116th Street outside the small but popular market show them casually using needles to inject drugs into their arms and during the weekend.

The men sit under the train tracks surrounded by bags containing their belongings and an overturned Citi bicycle, and pictures from the block the next day show even more men doing drugs at the site.

Although the area is primarily a shopping district, many families pass through the market as it borders the Cooke School Institute, which teaches special education students aged 5 to 21, as well as elementary schools PS 57 and PS 155 .

The market is also near the East Harlem office of the New York City Housing Authority and the East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center.

The scene comes despite New York City Mayor Eric Adam’s vow to crack down on homelessness and crime in the city, which is up nearly 40% from a year ago.
