Police are investigating the death of a British man whose body was found floating in the water of a port on the Costa Blanca.
Civil Guard divers recovered the body of the 53-year-old man at around 11am yesterday in the Calpe marina, north of Benidorm, after the alarm was raised just over an hour earlier.
The unnamed Briton had moored a boat he was said to be living on at the pleasure port earlier in the week after arriving from the nearby town of Altea.
An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today as police wait to hear if the autopsy reveals anything to indicate the man’s death was the result of possible foul play.
Sources close to the ongoing investigation said they believed it could have been a tragic accident and that he may have fallen into the water from the boat under the cover of darkness several hours before his body was seen.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Alicante said this morning: “I can confirm that we have recovered the body of a 53-year-old British man from the water in the port of Calpe.
“Yesterday around 9:40 am an emergency response coordination center informed us and we mobilized specialized divers from our GEAS unit.
“We couldn’t do anything to save him. “He was already dead when the police divers reached him.”
A well-placed source added: “The autopsy results will be key in determining the future of the investigation, but there was nothing at the scene to indicate any obvious signs that a crime had been committed.
“It could be an accidental death in which the man fell into the water.”
It was not immediately clear whether the dead man, who is unlikely to be named by police, was vacationing on the Costa Blanca or living in Spain.
The marina where the grim discovery was made is located at the foot of the iconic Peñón de Calpe or Peñón de Ifach, as it is known in Spanish, as is the port for the large fleet of fishing boats.
