Mystery as a quiet suburb starts to smell like a ‘dead body’ and nobody knows why

  • The fragrance was reported by residents of the Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village
  • They said their Queensland city of Condon smelled like a “corpse” for weeks
  • Townsville City Council has said the origin of the foul odor remains unknown

A quiet suburb has been plagued in recent weeks by a foul odor that has been compared to the smell of a corpse.

The fragrance was reported by residents of the Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village in the Townsville suburb of Condon, Queensland.

Some residents compared the smell to that of a dead body, while others think it smells like raw sewage.

The origin of the mysterious fragrance is unknown, but residents theorized that there may be a malfunction in the nearby sewer substation.

However, Townsville City Council said no leaks had been found.

A resident of the village, Jeff Williams, 71, claimed the city council has done nothing to address the odor.

“It smells like a corpse…. we have been smelling it for weeks, I am surprised that the municipality has done nothing about it, ‘said mr. Williams Townsville Bulletin.

He said that he woke up at night and that the smell made him vomit.

There have been problems with foul odors from a nearby chicken farm in the past, but Mr. Williams said this odor was much worse.

“I disagree that the smell is from a chicken farm, it has been around for 10 to 11 years and I have smelled it, it is unpleasant, but not completely dead, unpleasant,” he said.

A Townsville City Council spokesman said they have not received any complaints about a sewer leak, but have complained about a smell coming from the suburban wastewater treatment plant.

“As a result, the municipality has implemented odor measurement and monitoring in the immediate area, but found no discernible odor levels,” said the spokesman.

The council said they will track potential sources of the fragrance that are located closer to properties.
