An investigation is underway after a man’s body was pulled from the water near a boat ramp in South Australia on Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the Solomontown boat ramp in Port Pirie, three hours north of Adelaide, at about 6am after the man was spotted.

The 50-year-old man from Port Pirie West was pronounced dead at the scene, and CCTV footage from a nearby business shows the man was alive just 30 minutes earlier.

South African police said the death was not being treated as suspicious at this stage of the investigation, but a coroner would need to determine the cause.

Officers were reportedly taking photographs of a bicycle near the boat ramp, although it is unclear whether it belonged to the deceased.

A neighbour who was walking her dog near the scene of the incident said that while she did not know the man, she hoped his family could be “comforted”.

“Things like this don’t happen often… We’re a very close-knit community and this is going to cause a big stir,” he said. The Adelaide Advertiser.

The area was briefly cordoned off to the public on Saturday as detectives searched the scene and divers searched the water, but was reopened mid-afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
