An Australian dad has won the award for “strangest gift ever” after giving his children and their friends a truckload of meat for Christmas.

Australians have given each other some strange gifts in the past – from raw chicken to a life-size figure of Daniel Craig and 20 cents for “something nice”.

But this one certainly takes the cake.

Even though the father’s delivery of meat is an unconventional choice, his children appreciate the idea behind it and consider this practical gift “perfect.”

‘My friend’s father started the tradition a few years ago of giving us a complete cow and pig for Christmas each year.

‘He says he would rather know that we have food for the year rather than something that is not specifically a need, but a want.

“This is a tradition that we will work hard to pass on to our children as well,” one woman shared on Facebook.

Many fully supported the “brilliant” present, while others were not so sure.

‘This is a fantastic tradition!’ one was delirious.

‘What a fantastic gift. This way of gifting should be used today. Made me think,” wrote another.

It also turned out to be common in some families.

“My dad made us get half of (a cow) and half of (a pig) years ago,” one man said.

But some were concerned about the practical and health implications.

‘How big is your freezer and how long should you freeze meat? Freezing it for a year is surely not recommended,” said one.

—Does he also buy you a large freezer? asked another.

But an Australian meat science graduate previously revealed that relying on your sense of smell and detecting a “sour and pungent” smell is the biggest clue that your meat has “gone bad” and is unsafe to eat.

Jess Pryleswho was born in Australia but now lives in Texas, is passionate about food safety and preparing meat to produce delicious barbecue and home-cooked meals.

“You can’t really tell if the meat has spoiled by the color, but you can by the smell,” he said, before clarifying that the tactic changed slightly for vacuum-sealed cuts.

“Vacuum-sealed meat can have a very bitter smell when it first comes out of the bag,” he said. “But when you leave them outside for ten minutes, they smell much fresher and are safe to eat.”
