A woman travelling alone was shocked when her hostel expected her to share a double bed with a strange male guest.

A woman travelling alone was left “horrified” after a hostel asked her to share a double bed with a male guest she had never met.

The Australian arrived at her accommodation late at night and was eager to crawl into her single bed in a mixed dormitory for a good night’s sleep.

But she got an “uncomfortable” surprise when the hostel offered her half of a double bed already occupied by a male guest – and her own duvet cover.

The young woman shared the awkward situation with an online travel group and asked them if shared beds were common in hostels.

“Question, has anyone ever shared a bed in a hostel? I’m used to mixed dorms, but I’m sharing a bed with a guy I don’t know,” she asked.

“We each have our own duvet cover, but we’re in the same bed. I can tell he’s as uncomfortable as I am.”

After asking if there was any way to change rooms, the hostel said there was nothing else available, leaving the woman stuck alone in the “wild” sleeping arrangement.

“What do I do? It’s after 11pm so there’s not much I can do now, but would it be crazy to try and find another place to stay for tomorrow night?” he asked.

People were unanimous in criticising the hostel’s “misconduct”, which they were sure was the result of a booking error.

They said it was “crazy” to have to share a double bed with a stranger, especially when the other person was of the opposite sex.

“A shared bed? With a man? Full stop, unacceptable. I wouldn’t even feel comfortable sharing the same room with a man, you are owed a refund,” one woman said.

“And if he did try something (I’m not saying he would), but how can they think it’s okay for two strangers to share a bed, let alone a man and a woman?” another woman agreed.

“I would leave there quickly and report the shelter,” said a third woman.

Others thought that the only way this awkward arrangement could work out was if both people had agreed to it beforehand.

Someone in Perth who runs hostels said bed-sharing was definitely “weird” and only done at a guest’s specific request.

But unfortunately some travellers had also experienced the same embarrassing situation.

“This seems to be something that happens in a couple of hostels, it’s very strange and I don’t fully understand it, now I always look at pictures of the beds to avoid it,” said one.

One woman thought the fact that her bed partner was feeling “uncomfortable” was a sign that the single woman would be safe for the night.

“Considering he’s being respectful, I would just go to sleep and wait until morning… but I would definitely complain because he might have been a weirdo!” she said.

Another woman couldn’t believe that such an unlikely situation had happened to someone in real life: “How crazy! It sounds like the beginning of one of those cheesy romantic movies.”
