My girlfriend is going on a luxury one-week holiday paid for by another man – am I in the wrong for being mad?

A young man has been branded “insecure” and “jealous” for disapproving of his girlfriend going on a week-long vacation to Hawaii funded by another man.

The 21-year-old girlfriend was invited on the trip by her best friend who babysits for a “very rich divorced man” who paid for their two flights home.

The 22-year-old boyfriend felt strange about the situation and shared the details on Reddit.

“From my perspective, I see a lot of red flags, because I think guys generally give things to girls when they want or expect something in return,” he wrote.

“I’m a big fan of experiences and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to travel for free. However, I’m not naive and I know that men generally don’t bring attractive women with them on vacation for nothing.

The 40-year-old divorced man is going on vacation elsewhere and has asked the babysitter to look after his house, telling her she can bring someone to keep him company.

He offered his entire house as well as $2,000 in spending money on top of his regular salary.

The girlfriend works for an airline and was on hold to arrange her own travel, but the 40-year-old offered to pay and confirmed her tickets.

The boyfriend wrote: “I think it’s valid to not be a fan of him, especially since I’ve never met the guy.

“Part of me is also hurt since my girlfriend and I went to Hawaii earlier in the year but stayed within our budget. Stay in a hostel, not a fancy resort.

“I wonder why I’m here if she’s just accepting a super fancy vacation from another man, while I work from home to save for our future and pay for both of our trips.”

Hundreds of Redditors called the boyfriend “pathetic,” while others said they would feel the same.

“Your girlfriend isn’t going on vacation with another man, she’s going with her girlfriend who works for this man. He said she could bring a friend, he didn’t specify that the friend had to be your girlfriend,” one wrote.

“Without a doubt, he extended that extra invitation to make her feel more comfortable.” That was very thoughtful of him.

Another said it was “normal” for the rich to spend money excessively.

A third said: “The tickets have your girlfriend’s name on them but they’re actually for her friend.” The friend who babysits and whose employer told her she could bring someone with her.

Another said: “His friend is going on a work trip, he bought your girlfriend a ticket since she’s his friend’s plus one so she’ll have someone to be with in her free time.”

“I think it’s disgusting that your brain went, ‘She must be using him as a sugar daddy if she accepts a gift.’

However, some thought the girlfriend was wrong.

One person said that “if the roles were reversed” the girlfriend would be angry too.

“You can trust your girlfriend but not trust the intentions of the 40 year old divorced guy,” one wrote.

Someone else wrote: “I would actually advise repeating all of this to the girlfriend. Communication is always key. Let the chips fall where they may.
