A mother has revealed her fury after her eight-year-old son’s teacher handed out a “shameful” punishment for missing a day of school.

She was unpacking the child’s bag when she discovered an unconventional word search puzzle.

The 3rd grade boy had to look for words related to his absence, such as “excuse”, “graduate”, “responsibility” and “success”.

The mother revealed she was particularly upset because it was only the first day he was missing of the year and her son was generally a model student.

“I just don’t know how I feel about this,” she said in a post on Reddit. “My son had to ask me what it meant to skip school. Is this aimed at parents or just a fun worksheet? »

The 3rd grade boy had to look for words in a puzzle related to his absence, such as “excuse”, “graduate”, “responsibility” and “success”.

Thousands of people on the social media platform criticized the teacher and the school for their cruel punishment.

“I find this kind of shameful behavior towards children so strange that it’s not like the eight year old is responsible for his attendance at school (even if he was put on a school bus). It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to have their child attend,” one said.

Another wrote: “There are so many valid reasons for being late/missing class, and 95 percent of them are honestly too personal for people to share.” »

“There is no reason to shame a student for being late – it just makes them want to show up less, and I speak from vast personal experience,” one man wrote.

“I’ve been a teacher for 31 years, it’s ridiculous. Even if it is a student who has attendance issues, how is this going to solve the problem? The professor is an idiot,” added another.

But others criticized the mother for the way she handled the situation.

“You are demonstrating unnecessary emotional behavior towards your child. I’m slightly mad at you,” one woman said. “Participation is important. Take it from someone who often skipped school.

“I bet it’s just a coincidence and the class is learning new words.” It’s not all about you,” wrote another.
