A woman has been called crazy and stubborn after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend when he bought a puppy against her wishes.
The 24-year-old woman and her boyfriend of almost five years, who is also 24, moved in together in May.
She openly admits that she doesn’t like dogs and that she “doesn’t understand the hype” that he loves them, especially pugs.
So, I knew that one day they would have to have a difficult conversation about adding a four-legged friend to the family.
A month ago that happened.
She wrote on Reddit that she explained to her boyfriend that she’s not ready to get a dog, but that they might convince her to get one someday, but probably not a pug.
She said she doesn’t really find them cute. He grew up with them and is obsessed.
Since the conversation, her partner continued to send her photos of pugs for sale, but she ignored them.
A woman has broken up with her boyfriend because he bought her a pug without asking her, despite knowing that she doesn’t like dogs
“Then last Monday he told me he had set up a visit with a breeder to see the pugs on Friday. I’m starting to cry because I don’t want a dog right now,” she said.
‘I make it clear that I am not ready for this and that I do not want a dog at this time. “I’m thinking maybe I’ll just go and look. I look him dead in the eye and tell him please don’t buy one, I’m not okay with this,” she added.
And she didn’t think he would.
Then a puppy fence showed up at his house and he asked her to help move things “to make room for the puppy.”
‘I thought he was joking until I kept questioning him further and found out he wasn’t. I burst into tears in front of my entire family. “At this point, I’m also upset about the fact that he didn’t tell me for a whole day, he didn’t respect me by saying I wasn’t ready,” she said.
She broke up with him over the issue and he called her “irrational” and unfair for not giving the dog a chance.
“His whole family thinks I’m being stubborn and crazy,” she said.
But the people of Reddit supported her.
‘It’s absolutely worth breaking up, and I say that as a person who loves dogs. A dog is a big commitment and you should both be excited about having one. The problem here is that you couldn’t have been clearer and he’s completely misleading you,” one woman said.
‘It’s also good that this is a deciding factor. “If my boyfriend didn’t want a dog, I would have a dog and a new boyfriend,” another woman added.
‘Replace the word with baby and hopefully everyone will see the problem. “You’re wrong,” said another.
“If her whole family thinks she’s being irrational and crazy, I see where he gets it from,” another added.
The woman had told her boyfriend that one day he might have a dog, but never a pug.
Others warned her not to patch things up with her ex-boyfriend.
‘There is a power play here. Get ready for much more. If you are going to take a step, this is the time. “He’s shown you who he is,” one woman said.
‘Forget the dog: you said you weren’t comfortable with something and he did it anyway. Then he called you crazy for being upset about it. It could be dangerous,” said another.
‘You’re only 24 years old! This is the stage in which you discover what the adult wants from life. What are your values, goals, etc.? This is also where you find out what you’re looking for in a life partner and this guy isn’t it,” another suggested.
Others suggested that it is the boyfriend who is delusional by wanting a pug in the first place.
“I don’t think I’m prepared for the expense either, so now add the money problems.” If you need to ‘save for a pen’, what would be like $50? ‘How are you going to afford a pug that is VERY likely to need vet visits, surgeries, special diets and shampoos, because even when they are well bred, they are poorly bred?’ said one woman.
Others revealed that they have been in the same situation.
“My mom wanted a dog, my dad didn’t. She got it anyway and has taken my dad and me to the hospital on separate occasions years apart,” said one young woman.
“I was in your position. My fiancé wanted a dog. We lived together and I already had a dog and she had a cat and a fish. I was convinced I didn’t want to throw another pet into the mix. She promised me that her kids would take care of the dog. I didn’t believe him and still said no.
‘She showed up at home with a dog. He was furious. She claimed that everything would be fine because she was sending him to a fancy month-long obedience camp. We’ll guess what. When the dog returned, no one followed the training and the dog was a hyperactive nightmare,” said another.
They ended up leaving their partner and children because of it.
The young woman said her family supports her and is confused as to why someone would buy a dog without their partner’s approval.
