Elon Musk, 51, has promised that “everything we discover will be released” as Twitter continues to release files concerning censorship on the social networking platform he now controls
Republicans demand hearings on Twitter, and more information about whether GOP candidates were blacklisted prior to elections after the second release files showed that conservative accounts were suspended or suppressed. This despite not being in violation of any policies.
Elon Musk answered ‘yes’ to a question from a user asking him if any political candidates were being shadowbanned while they were running for office, or seeking re-election.
Republican Senator Roger Wicker has called for the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to hold a hearing into censorship from Big Tech and GOP Rep. Andrew Clyde has called it ‘election interference’.
The release of Second tranche of Twitter files uploaded Thursday night The social media giants had a secret blacklist of accounts and topics to stop them from trending. In a scheme critics called “The Downplaying of Conservatives”, the social media giants deliberately downplayed conservatives. ‘Soviet-style bulls***’.
Conservative commentators, such as Charlie Kirk and Dan Bongino were deliberately placed on a search blacklist’ for Bongino’s sake or tabbed do not amplify’ for Kirk’s.
However, there are calls to release more files that could expose similar methods used on Republicans seeking election.
Musk, who purchased Twitter in October for $44 Billion, promised to end’shadow banning’, which secretly downgrades a person’s tweets and trending themes to reduce their reach.
“Twitter is working to update their software so that you can see your true account status. It will let you know if you have been shadow banned, the reason for it, and how to appeal.” he stated.
Elon Musk’s response to a user asking him if any political candidates were subjected to shadowbanning during their campaigns for office or re-election was the spark that sparked calls for more accountability.
Musk, 51 years old, singled out Yoel Rot, the global head for trust and safety. He wrote in internal messages that his desire was to have more creative ways of censoring or muddling certain accounts and specific content.
‘Truth is out: Twitter did blacklist/suppress accounts their leftist employees disagreed with & manipulated trends against conservatives,’ Republican Rep. Steve Scalise tweeted on Thursday night.
Yet another thing the media called Republicans “conspiracy theorists” for saying has turned out to be true. They can’t get away with this.
Ronna McDaniel (chair Republican National Committee) wrote on Twitter Thursday night: “After I was shadow banned in 2018 (the DNC Chair was not), Twitter put out a statement emphatically saying: “We do not shadow ban.” This confirms that was a LIE.’
Musk, however, defended Jack Dorsey’s founder and former CEO of Twitter.
Jack was not always in agreement with the decisions made and Jack was unaware of systemic bias. He said that the asylum was run by inmates on Thursday night.
“Jack has a pure and honest heart imo.”
The ‘Chief Twit’ was responding to Bari Weiss’ revelations that Twitter kept an’secret blacklist’ for certain topics and accounts in order to prevent them from trending.
The accounts of conservative commentators were deliberately made less prominent in what one called ‘Soviet-style bulls***’, while another said he was treated ‘with more censorship than Hamas.’
Weiss shared how Twitter had 200 case-handling specialists who dealt with them every day.
People who challenged the COVID orthodoxy on lockdowns and mask mandates (e.g. Stanford’s Dr Jay Bhattacharya), were also placed onto a’search list’.
Jack Dorsey, then-CEO, was asked by Dave Rubin in October 2020: “Do you shadowban based upon political beliefs?” It’s as simple as that.
Dorsey replied, “No.
Yoel Roth was Twitter’s global head of safety and trust. Musk highlighted Thursday’s tweet by Roth, in which he referred to Trump White House as full of “actual Nazis” in a 2017 tweet
Vijaya Gadde (Twitter’s head for legal, policy and trust) also denied that Twitter had such blacklists.
According to Weiss, she said that she did not shadow ban in 2018, alongside Kayvon Beykpour (Twitter’s head of product).
They said: “And we certainly do not shadow ban based upon political viewpoints or ideologies.”
Weiss made the revelations in Thursday’s second tranche of what is being called The Twitter Files.
She Twitter reported that it used “visibility filtering” to downplay objectionable accounts. Teams of people worked together to reduce the traction gained from individual tweets.
It was praised by a senior Twitter insider as a powerful tool.
The teams working on minimizing certain accounts or topics were supported by a top-level “Site Integrity Policy, Policy Escalation Support” team. Here the CEO and top legal advisers would resolve sensitive cases of censorship. Parag Agrawal (his successor as CEO) and Jack Dorsey were both part of the team.
Musk was delighted to hear about the details of the company he now controls – he retweeted Weiss’ thread with a popcorn emoticon.
“As @bariweiss clearly explains, the rules were enforced against right, but not against left,” he stated.
He Addition: “Truth brings about reconciliation.”
Weiss reported that the practice was called “visibility filtering” on Twitter.
“Think of visibility filtering as a way for us suppress what people see at different levels. It’s a very effective tool,’ a senior Twitter employee told her.
Twitter would block searches by individual users, make it harder to find a specific tweet, block posts from the trending page, and remove them hashtag searches.
Another source, a Twitter engineer, said to Weiss: “We control visibility quite extensively. We also control the amplification and promotion of your content quite a lot. The truth is that most people don’t realize how much we control.
Weiss stated that the matter was handled by Twitter’s Strategic Response Team – Global Escalation Team, also known as SRT GET – which handled 200 cases per day.
SIP-PES, Site Integrity Policy, Policy Escalation support, was a higher-ranking team that dealt with complex and high-profile cases.
Parag Agrawal, Dorsey’s replacement as CEO, and Gadde, the global head for trust and safety, sat on this group.
Roth emailed colleagues on Slack, to say that spam enforcements were used to circumvent safety team members ‘under-enforcing policies’.
If @LibsofTiktok is blocked, the group will need to intervene.
Weiss stated that the account was suspended six more times in 2022 and that Chaya Raichik was blocked from her account each time for at least one week.
Her Raichik told Raichik that their account was suspended due to violations of Twitter’s hateful conduct policy. However, Twitter internalally admitted that there was no violation.
Weiss received an October 2022 SIP-PES memo. It stated that the account “has not directly engaged [in] behavior violative of Hateful Conduct policy.”
They argued that her posts encouraged online harassment of hospitals and medical providers’, insinuating that ‘gender-affirming healthcare’ is equivalent to child abuse and grooming.
Weiss stated that their response was quite different from that given to Raichik when she was doxxed. Her home address was published online. Raichik complained but Twitter refused to remove the tweet and it is still up on the site today.
Raichik tweeted: “They suspended me multiple time knowing that I never violated any policies. This is what happens if you discuss things they don’t want you talking about. I am glad that Twitter is gone. Thank you @elonmusk.
Musk replied: “You’re very welcome. Twitter won’t be perfect in the future, but it will be *much* better.’
Roth was also criticised, Weiss said that Roth was active in censoring accounts.
She noted that he had written to an employee on the Health, Misinformation, Privacy, and Identity research team wanting to improve ‘non-removal policy interventions like disabling engagements and deamplification/visibility filtering.’
Roth wrote: “If misinformation exposure directly causes harm, then we should use remediations to reduce exposure. Limiting the spread/virality content is a good method to do this.”
He Dorsey said that he was supportive of the censorship.
‘We got Jack on board with implementing this for civic integrity in the near term, but we’re going to need to make a more robust case to get this into our repertoire of policy remediations – especially for other policy domains,’ Roth wrote.
Tucker Carlson, Fox News host and Fox News host immediately seized on Weiss’ report, saying that it ‘confirms something many suspected but none knew for sure – that Twitter routinely censored prominent opponents of the Biden administration without any factual justification whatsoever.
He The Stanford doctor who spoke out against COVID lockdowns was highlighted. He was blacklisted for saying that it was ‘doubtless at request of authorities’.
Carlson stated that the trending of Carlson’s tweets prevented them from being seen, so most of his tweets were not visible.
According to Weiss they had once placed a search ban on him. Users couldn’t find tweets by him because they were inaccurate.
“No, because they were correct. That was the crime. That’s always the crime. They will not punish you for lying.
He He added, “It was strategic. They weren’t censoring people to be annoying. They were censoring people in order to provide factual information that could have prevented certain policies or election results.
“So, you know that this was sophisticated – and had an impact on American society, I would think.
Charlie Kirk, Conservative commentator, said that Carlson was right to be angry about the report on Thursday night.
“They’re treating me Twitter account with more scrutiny, censorship, than the prime Minister of Iran, Hamas than people who do terroristic type damage,” stated Charlie Kirk, who was labeled ‘does not amplify” in internal tagging.
“Now we [have] Evidence to show that’s exactly the reason my Twitter account has fallen 95 percent in engagement over the past couple of years.
Fox News commentator Dan Bongino, whose account was put on a ‘search blacklist’, said it was ‘Soviet-style bulls***.’
He He said that he averaged 115,000 tweets per day at peak. This is a questionable statement, as it raises questions about COVID lockdowns.
Kirk said that he was called a conspiracy theorist and was smeared. He also added that he complained to Dorsey and met him personally. Dorsey assured Kirk that shadow banning wasn’t happening.
According to Weiss: Dr Jay Bhattacharya was placed on a search blacklist’ by Twitter after he argued that COVID lockdowns were harmful to children.
According to Bari Weiss (right), Twitter censored conservative commentators Dan Bongino, (left) and Charlie Kirk, (right).
Kirk said that the social media company was censoring Kirk’s words because he posed a threat to the regime’s authority.
He They’re treating my account on Twitter with more scrutiny than the prime minster of Iran, Hamas or people who do actual terroristic-type damage.
“Now we [have] There is evidence to support that. That’s why I created my Twitter account in the last couple of weeks [of]Years has seen a drop in engagement of 95 percent.
“Were they instructed to do this by federal government? He asked, describing how he saw Twitter transform from a social media platform to a ‘Democrat Super PAC.’
He “Apparently asking questions about the lockdown was a threat,” he added. They were told to do so by Anthony Fauci, the federal government.
We may never know, but Twitter at its best was a place that allowed heterodox ideas to spread. Twitter went to great lengths to suppress our account and censor it.
He “I’ve been told for a long time, so strange that I can’t find your Twitter account. You’re a verified user, your name isn’t common, how come you don’t appear?
“When I spoke about it on my show, I was called both a conspiracy theorist & a wacko.
Google Ads banned my website; YouTube banned me for suggesting that cloth masks don’t work. This is now scientifically proven.
“Now I realize I am on a not safe to work’ shadow ban on Twitter because I’ve been accused of being a conservative thought crime.
He I added, “Tell me again how do we live in a free nation.”
