Red Polls cows looked like

A herd of cows were so intrigued by an impromptu choral performance in a park that they joined the audience to watch, with one even nodding its head in time to the music.

Red Polls cows appeared “mesmerised” by the West Bridgford Social Singers as they performed impromptu a cappella performances at Mill Pond, Cambridge.

Lori Cunningham filmed the “magical” encounter as she cycled home on September 7 after spotting the farm animals all looking in the same direction.

She said: ‘I saw cows along the road, which is not unusual as they roam freely around here, but they seemed to be looking in one direction.

‘I followed his gaze and at the same time I heard singing and noticed that small groups of people were gathering to listen to an improvised choir performance.

“It was beautiful. There was even an interaction between a pair of cows who nuzzled two singers, almost as if to say thank you for the beautiful music.

“It was a sublime moment and a poignant reminder that cows are sensitive, feeling creatures.”

The Coe Fen pack have large cowbell-like collars containing GPS trackers and follow the “commons watch” tradition used in towns before the 17th century.

They are a common sight for locals and visitors to the university city during the spring and summer months.

The West Bridgford Social Singers had been on a social day trip to Cambridge with 54 of their members when they were joined by four animals.

Secretary Lyn Schofield said the cows were “absorbed” and it was a “magical moment” as they stood there for about an hour.

She said: ‘I was born in Cambridge and I told others that cows own this land.

‘We sat and had a picnic in the corner of the mill pond, which was lovely. We started singing some songs and the cows came walking across.

‘One of our members was headbutted three times because she was petting one of them and he liked pets.

‘I swear one of the cows was bobbing its head to the rhythm of the song.

‘Once we reached Christ’s Pieces, the cows also returned to their field at Coe Fen.’

The Nottingham-based community choir has been around for 30 years and often runs social trips where singers can meet each other outside of rehearsals.

Lyn added: ‘It was one of those lovely moments that was captured and the cows just did it for us.

“We were surprised by how long they remained motionless, as if they were hypnotized.”

The choir sang Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” to the cows, as well as Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s “Shallow.”
