Museum guests will have to strip NAKED to enter nude exhibition in France

Date:

A French museum is hosting an exhibition where guests must undress to enter, followed by a drink and a chat about the experience.

The event at the macLYON, the museum of contemporary art in Lyon, is part of a series of two acts focusing on the presence of the body in the works of the macLYON collection.

Naked visitors can enjoy the 90-minute session on Thursday, which aims to move away from the idea of the 17th-century French philosopher René Descartes: ‘I think, therefore I am’.

Instead, it wants to point out that we are above all our bodies, and that there is no “pure” thought separate from an organism that perceives and experiences.

“Our idea is to question the issue of the body in a given space, to see how bodies interact with other bodies,” a macLYON spokesperson told The Times.

Frédéric Martin, the industry president, added: ‘It’s interesting to experience an exhibition completely naked. As a result, we focus on our own perception of ourselves, with a social artifice.’

He said naturists tend to stay out of sight so as not to “cause panic in the more polite society.” But now we come out from behind our walls to say that philosophy is doing very well.’

The macLYON organizes the event together with the regional branch of the French Naturist Federation, with tickets costing €11.

The first act of the Incarnations series runs through July 9. The works on display, dating from the 1960s, presenting the body in its physical truth, as a means of experimenting with oneself and the world.

The second act of the exhibition opens in September 2023 in the same room and deals with the confrontation between the body and the environment while exploring the same themes.

Other cultural institutions in Paris have tried to tap into it the country’s approximately 2.6 million naturists.

The Maillol Museum in Paris hosted a series of events last year for nudes to see the Hyperrealism exhibition, which featured incredibly realistic nude sculptures.

The exhibition cataloged a way of working, starting in the 1960s, with the development of modeling technology such as silicone, which attempts to mimic human bodies exactly, warts and all.

It was meant to shed light on aesthetics in an age of photo filters and the metaverse, where we seem to have lost touch with reality.

The contemporary art museum Palais de Tokyo in the capital also held tours for naked people in 2018.

After leaving their clothes in the cloakroom, visitors could visit exhibitions before the gallery opened its doors to clothed visitors.

The Paris Naturist Association welcomed the idea.

Last year, Paris created a special zone for nudists in the Bois de Vincennes park.

Earlier this month, a Swedish artist locked herself alone and naked in a cage in a bizarre public exhibition in Stockholm’s Sodermalm district for three days, ending with her mother sharing a cigarette.

Elin Skarin, 35, relied on items thrown into the cage by members of the public as she navigated herself through 73 hours of madness in an effort to “examine the relationship between her personal identity and her role as an actor.”

Although the cage started with nothing but a camping toilet, some toilet paper and a microphone, it was soon overrun with gifts ranging from food to bottles of beer and practical items such as a pillow and clothing. Footage taken at the exhibit late last month provided a snapshot of what Skarin did during her three days of self-confinement.

One clip showed her completely naked with her arms raised in the air, drawing rapturous applause from the audience.

She was later seen in the cage, posing for photos and staring at the audience.

As the video progressed, the performer could be seen charging from one side of the cage to the other before ducking into a box and hiding.

As the crowd continued to applaud her, she reappeared, this time outside the cage holding a bottle of wine and celebrating.
