The moment a police officer punched a man in the face has been captured on video.
Footage shows the man standing near the open passenger side door of a patrol car before the officer approaches and delivers a right hand that knocks him to the ground.
The dramatic incident unfolded at Knox Park in Murwillumbah, northern New South Wales, on Monday when police responded to reports of an assault.
During their investigations, police will allege that a 50-year-old man approached officers and attempted to intervene in the conflict.
Footage shows the man standing near the open passenger side door of a patrol car before the officer approaches and delivers a right hand that knocks him to the ground.
“The man was ordered to move forward before being removed from the scene to prevent him from further impeding police,” New South Wales Police said in a statement.
“A short time later, the same man approached a marked police sedan and allegedly placed his belongings on the hood and attempted to enter the vehicle.”
Police allege the man “grabbed a police officer by the arm and a struggle ensued.”
He was taken to Tweed Heads police station and charged with breaking into a vehicle, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
He was granted bail and will appear at Murwillumbah Local Court on May 22.
