A murder probe was started after a body was found wrapped in plastic.
Residents called the police just before 11 a.m. on Saturday after noticing something suspicious near a creek in Lake Macquarie.
A police spokesman said: “A crime scene has been identified after the discovery of a body in water at Wakefield Rd Teralba.

Wakefield Road remains closed between The Broadway and Rhondda Road in the evening.
The stretch of road connects the small towns of Killingworth and Barnsley, just west of New Castle.
The victim will undergo a post-mortem examination on Saturday evening. The gender remains unknown.
The body was found in isolated bushland with no surrounding houses.
Murder investigators and Lake Macquarie police, who are leading the investigation, asked Barnsley's residence to take CCTV recordings of several weeks.
