Indian hitter Murali Vijay agreed to join Essex for the remainder of the England County Championship campaign. Vijay played the first two Indian events on his current tour through England, but was ruled out after fighting in his great defeat at Lord's. The 34-year-old starter was fired twice without scoring in that game, but he caught Essex's attention for half a century against his new club during a tour game in July. Vijay joins Essex as a replacement player abroad after the departure of Australian sealer Peter Siddle.
Essex has three games left in the First Division of the County Championship and is currently in fourth place.
"We are delighted that Murali has chosen to come here, he is a great hitter who can score runs at the top of the order," said Essex head coach Anthony McGrath.
"Vijay's ability to score runs means he can be the creator of the difference in a game, and that ability is something we wanted to bring towards the end of the season and something that excites us."
Vijay added: "I was here with the Indian team about a month ago and saw first-hand how good the crowd is, I can not wait to play for Essex and hopefully win some games."
