A small plane crashed and police and emergency services feared for those on board.

According to police, the plane crashed in Mulgathing, about 200 kilometres southwest of Coober Pedy in South Australia.

The alarm was raised around 9.30am on Thursday, but details are still unclear.

“Emergency services are heading to the scene of the accident and further details will be provided as they become available,” South Australian Police said.

There is a remote sheep station at Mulgathing in outback South Australia, located west of the Stuart Highway and close to Tarcoola.

The 530,000 hectare station also has a landing strip.

On the website of the station operator, Jumbuck Pastoral, a plane is used to “facilitate gathering” at the property, “on the edge of the Great Victorian Desert”.
