A much-loved grandmother died after a teenager allegedly stole a car at gunpoint, ran a red light and crashed into other vehicles at a busy intersection.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter after a 69-year-old woman was killed and two police officers injured in the crash north of Brisbane on Thursday.

He was wanted by police for attempted armed robbery and had a criminal record that included property crimes and breaching bail.

He is due to appear in Brisbane Youth Court on Friday.

Police allege a woman was robbed at gunpoint and an Audi stolen by the 16-year-old in nearby Griffin, prompting officers to set up cordons in the area.

Shortly afterwards, the Audi was allegedly seen traveling through a Murrumba Downs intersection at around 9.45am, crashing into a Toyota sedan in a “high-impact collision”.

The Audi then crashed into an unmarked police vehicle at the intersection, hospitalizing two officers, police said.

Chief Superintendent Adam Guild said the 69-year-old woman was trapped in the Toyota and officers performed CPR on her while they waited for paramedics.

She could not be revived.

The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital along with the two officers. He remains under police surveillance in the hospital.

A search of the Audi turned up a firearm, Supt Guild said.

One resident, Todd Whisson, who lives on Dohles Rocks Road, said he was about to start his art class when one of his students saw a car with several teenagers inside following her for several miles.

“So she came to my house to park for class and the car kept going and she thought, ‘Oh, that’s good, they’re gone,'” Mr Whisson told the Courier Mail.

Whisson said the teens returned a short time later while his student was standing outside her car.

“They stopped and said, ‘give us your car, give us your keys or we’ll shoot you,'” he said.

He said his student gave them the car keys before leaving.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli was quick to weigh in on the Murrumba Downs incident after a successful tough campaign on youth crime measures, ending Labor’s nine-year reign at the October 26 election.

Two police officers were also injured when the allegedly stolen car collided with their police vehicle (pictured, a police officer at the scene of the accident on Thursday).

‘Although the investigation is in its early stages, news of what has happened will be heartbreaking for Queenslanders, as it was for me.

‘A family is coming to terms with the loss of a loved one and the thoughts and prayers of an entire state are with them – they are owed answers.

“Our priority is to support the family, the first responders and the community suffering from an unimaginable tragedy,” he said.

Crisafulli’s LNP government is set to introduce tough new “adult crime, adult time” legislation by Christmas, following its electoral success.
