Angela Rayner is being urged to swiftly approve Marks & Spencer’s controversial plans to demolish its flagship Oxford Street store.

The deputy prime minister is reviewing plans that were blocked by the previous government only for that decision to be overturned following a legal challenge.

M&S wants to knock down the 1929 art deco building near Marble Arch in London and build a larger ten-storey block of shops and offices.

M&S chief operating officer Sacha Berendji said: “Unlocking this investment would send a clear message that the planning system will support sustainable growth.”

However, several architects, including TV presenter Kevin McCloud, are opposed to the project.
