  • Five of Liverpool’s first-team stars own an elite racehorse as part of a syndicate
  • Mr McCann made his Leicester debut and climbed to third place
  • Paard emulated that of its owners, who finished third in the Premier League
  • The foal cost £65,000 and is being trained by Tom Dascombe at Michael Owen’s stable

A horse of five of Liverpool’s first-team stars continued this season’s Merseyside trend by rising to third place against all odds.

The two-year-old, named Mr McCann after the Liverpool press officer, made his Leicester debut and came just behind the leaders, despite his pricey offer.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are part of the syndicate that owns Mr McCann, along with former Red Adam Lallana, who is now in Brighton.

Jockey Richard Kingscote gave Mr McCann a brisk ride down the side rail of the grandstand, and the 11-1 shot was struck at less than a length by fellow newcomer Ernie’s Valentine, showing promising signs of things to come.

The colt, which cost £65,000, is being trained by Tom Dascombe at former Anfield hero Michael Owen’s stable in Cheshire.

Trainer Dascombe will have another runner with strong football connections at Ayr on Wednesday as Red Power, with legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Michael Owen among its owners, look to build on a debut fourth in the 6f novice run.
