A man allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run was seen a few meters away as police held a news conference urging the driver to come forward.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Pritchard Street and Hemphill Avenue in Mount Pritchard, in Sydney’s southwest, about 3am on Wednesday after a passing motorist found a man lying in the middle of the road.
The victim, a 31-year-old man of Indian or subcontinental appearance who was believed to be intoxicated, suffered serious injuries to the head and torso and died at the scene.
Police declared a crime scene and called a press conference at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of the collision.
But as New South Wales Police Inspector Benjamin McIntyre addressed the media, he was unaware that the suspect was walking just meters behind him, as seen in footage from the press conference.
A 55-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an alleged hit-and-run in Sydney’s southwest.
New South Wales Police Inspector Benjamin McIntyre was addressing the media, unaware that his suspect was walking just a few meters behind him, as seen in footage from the press conference.
Nine News obtained CCTV of a man stumbling down a street early on Wednesday morning before a black Lexus drove by about 45 minutes later.
Those images were shown to detectives who found the same Lexus in a driveway just meters from the crime scene.
The 55-year-old man was then arrested at around 9.30am and taken to Fairfield Police Station. He has not yet been charged.
At the beginning of the press conference, a reporter asked, “If the driver behind the wheel of that car was looking at you right now, what would his message be?”
‘Go to your local police station or contact us immediately. “We really need to speak to you and we appeal to your conscience,” Inspector McIntyre said, unaware that the suspect had been pacing past a house behind him moments before.

Officers remained at the home after the arrest, where they were seen inspecting the black Lexus and placing evidence in plastic bags.

He has not yet been formally identified.
It is understood the victim and driver did not know each other.
The passing motorist who came across the man’s body was treated by paramedics for shock.
Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
