New South Wales Police have launched a critical incident investigation after the fatal crash in western Sydney about 2.30pm on Monday.

Police say an officer from their Highway and Traffic Patrol unit attempted to stop a motorcycle on Arthur Street in Strathfield.

However, the driver did not stop so police began pursuing the vehicle.

In the first minutes of the chase, the motorcycle driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, hit the side of a Toyota Corolla while trying to overtake it.

The impact caused him to lose control of his bicycle and crash into a light pole.
