Footage of the intersection crash taken by a dash cam owner has left video viewers glad the collision occurred.

The footage, uploaded to Facebook by Dash Cam Owners Australia, showed someone running a red light colliding with another vehicle in Wallsend, west of Newcastle.

But the seemingly strange reaction of those who saw the video soon became apparent.

In the vision, the dash cam owner enters the intersection only to be hit by the other car coming from the right just before 5:30 pm on Sunday.

To the left of the collision scene two schoolchildren can be seen crossing the street on bicycles.

Those who commented on the video were convinced that the car that caused the crash would have ended up running over the children if it had not been for the collision.

Many said they were “glad” about the accident and said the alternative could have been devastating.

‘Thank goodness they hit you and not the cyclists! “You are an accidental hero,” one woman wrote.

‘Exact place, exact moment. You sure saved those kids,” said another.

‘Wow!! “That could have ended badly,” a third person commented.

Many social media users have said they were “glad” that the dash cam owner’s car had been in an accident.

Some were scathing and said the driver should “get off the road,” while others hypothesized about what may have happened in the moments before the accident.

“Probably concentrating on his phone,” one person said.

“What was so important that you couldn’t wait to get the green light?” asked another.

“The red light should be permanently removed from the road,” said a third person.
