A Texas mom has been arrested for allegedly shooting her five-year-old son in the stomach while trying to beat a neighbor’s loose boxer puppy that had run out of its owner’s home.
The incident happened at 5 p.m. Saturday at the 700 block of Dunham Road in Houston.
Officers arrived at the scene for reports of gunfire and found a five-year-old boy with a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.
The child’s mother, 24-year-old Angelia Vargas, was arrested and charged with deadly conduct with a firearm for shooting down a roadway toward occupied homes.
According to an incident report, Vargas, her husband and son were cycling outside when Bruno, a neighbor’s six-month-old brown and white boxer puppy, shot out.

According to police, Vargas almost immediately pulled out a small-bore pistol and fired three shots at the dog, one of which ricocheted and hit the woman’s own son in the stomach. ABC13.
The boy was taken to a hospital in stable condition to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Bruno suffered abrasions to two of his legs and the owner was charged for walking the dog without a leash.
Part of the incident was captured on a Ring doorbell camera, which shows Bruno’s owner chasing him across the yard, yelling at the animal to come back, just before multiple gunshots sound and a woman screams.

The owner told Click2Houston that Bruno, who he described as a friendly dog, ran out of the house after he opened the door to see if his brother was outside.
The puppy crossed the street to where Vargas was with her family.
“He didn’t run or bark at them,” the dog owner said. “He just walked over there and the lady started screaming.”
The owner argued that Vargas could have handled the situation differently and insisted that his dog wouldn’t have done anything ‘bad’ to her son, especially given that there were adults around.
Bruno’s owner added that he feels bad about what happened and that he had nightmares after the shooting.

“I’d rather have my dog shot than the kid shot,” he said, holding Bruno’s leash.
Vargas has since appeared in court for the first time and was not allowed to go near Bruno’s owner.
Court records show that Vargas has a criminal record, including a 2009 petty robbery charge and a assault charge with bodily harm, which was later dropped.
